Golf: Lauder Trophy entry breaks the 100 barrier

THE venerable Harry Lauder Trophy, dating back to 1924, is set to attract a record number of golfers to the Portobello course on Sunday.

Commemorating the musical hall entertainer who hailed from Portobello, entries for the popular event which features the top 16 stroke play scores entering into match-play the following week have broken through the 100 barrier for the first time with a field of at least 108 expected, according to organiser Kenny Craigie.

Previous winners include the late five times Scottish amateur champion Ronnie Shade, MBE (1953-54), while two other Duddingston members, Ian Fraser and Duncan Ireland, have won the competition six times apiece.

Latterly the balance of power has swung to Silverknowes who have provided three successive winners in Ian Randall (2010), Chris Milligan (2009) and Paul Ross (2008).

Late entries will be accepted from those wishing the negotiate the tight and testing nine-hole course twice. Contact Kenny Craigie on either 0131-669 4361 or 0131-669 0046.
