Cricket: Tasmanian Butterworth joins Saltires

Scotland Saltires have signed Tasmanian all-rounder Luke Butterworth as their overseas player for next season's Clydesdale Bank40 competition.

Butterworth, who has played 36 first-class and 48 one-day games for his state, will also represent club side Greenock during the 2011 season.

Cricket Scotland chief executive Roddy Smith said: "We have an excellent relationship with Tasmania and were keen on attracting another of their state players to replace George Bailey this year. Luke has a superb record and, being a genuine all-rounder, will greatly assist with the balance and options available to head coach Peter Steindl and captain Gordon Drummond."

Meanwhile, Watsonians have re-signed Kiwi Tim Weston as their professional ahead of the coming SNCL season.

The return of the 28-year-old batsman is a big boost for the Edinburgh side who surprised many by finishing runners-up to Grange in last year's Premier Division. In 2010 he scored 596 runs for the Myreside men, including two centuries, and has been in good recent form.

Watsonians president Ross Brooks said: "I am delighted that we have been able to secure a deal for Tim to return to Myreside for the coming season. He had an immensely positive impact on the club last year and being able to include him in the squad for 2011 is certainly good news for Watsonian cricket."
