Letter: Wrong target

Charles Wardrop (Letters 5 February) suggests "money-grubbing legal cowboys" are the cause of the way human rights law is working. The European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) incorporated into Scots law is part and parcel of liberal ideology and is individualistic.

Hence it provides the legal profession with economic opportunities. But as it hands political issues over to unelected judges to decide, it is undemocratic.

Many believe human rights are a "left-wing" cause; on the contrary, the ECHR fits comfortably with a "neo-liberal" free-market agenda. The Left should give priority to economic and social rights being demolished by stealth under the "big society" slogan.
